And appear to involve the concatenation of several different effects 19 ; . The most prominent and rapidly occurring changes are produced in cellular membranes. Within the first 3 hr after its addition to cell cultures, D-glucosamine alters the ultrastructure of the plasma and intracellular membranes 17-19 ; , inhibits membrane transport of nucleosides 20 ; , increases nucleoside leakage to the extracellular space 20 ; , shifts the distribution of tritiated glucosamine incorporation from glycoproteins to glycolipids 19 ; , inhibits the flow of ['4C]acetate into sterols and lipids 19, 21 ; , potentiates the inhibition of cholesterol synthesis by local anesthetics 21 ; , and inhibits cell aggregation, homotypic cell sorting, and lectin agglutination 22-24 ; . These observations led us to postulate that the selective toxicity of D-glucosamine towards tumor cells might arise primarily from its effects upon cellular membranes 19 ; . To explore this possibility, we have examined the effects upon cultured tumor cells of D-glucosamine in combination with lidocaine, a membrane-active drug that by itself has no known tumoricidal activity. Lidocaine potentiated the cytotoxicity of glucosamine toward the tumor cells, as did various other membrane-active drugs. Although the effective potentiators possessed different chemical structures, most had in common the ability to act as local anesthetics.

The aim of this talk is to present a review of the results obtained by the authors concerning the Perfectly Matched Layers PML ; . This method has been introduced by Brenger in 1994 [2] to simulate the propagation of transient waves in infinite media. e Its principle consists on surrounding the computational domain, which is necessarily finite, by an absorbing layer which has the astonishing property not to generate any reflection at its interface with the computational domain. This is achieved by adding to the wave equation a very special damping term, acting only in the direction orthogonal to the layer. There are two main questions raised by the PML technique : The stability of the layers. It is now well-known that the PML can be instable when applied to anisotropics wave equation for instance aeroacoustics or elastodynamics equation ; : some waves increase exponentially in the PML instead of being damped. The analysis of the accuracy of the PML. For numerical reasons, the layer should have a finite width and a Neumann condition is usually imposed at its end. The waves are then reflected at the end of the PML and come back to the domain. Even if the waves are strongly damped, it is important to estimate this reflections, especially when one wants to validate a numerical code. The first part of our talk will concern the acoustics wave equation in two dimension. We will show how the use of the so-called Cagniard-de Hoop technique can provide the Green function of the half-space problem bounded by a finite PML and how we can derive error estimates from this analytical solution. We will also show that our results can be extended to the case of a numerical domain surrounded by PML. In the second part we will focus on the aeroacoustic waves equation. We will recall that the instabilities in the PML can be understood thanks to a high frequency plane waves analysis and that the problem is well-posed but unstable [1]. This analysis show that the instabilities are due to the presence of so-called back-propagative waves, whose group and phase velocity vectors have opposite directions. We will conclude by presenting a new analysis of the instabilities in the time-domain thanks to the Cagniardde Hoop method. This analysis can be regarded as a complement of the plane waves analysis and give a better understanding of the the behaviour of the back-propagative waves in the PML.

1. Introduction Glucosamine, 2-amino-2-deoxy-D -glucose, is an amino monosaccharide that is an essential component of mucopolysaccharides and chitin. Glycosaminoglycans mucopolysaccharides ; are large complexes of negatively-charged carbohydrate chains that are incorporated into mucous secretions, connective tissue, skin, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Glucosamine and its acetylated derivative, N-acetylglucosamine, are readily synthesized in the body from glucose. Because of its high concentration in joint tissues, the hypothesis that glucosamine supplements would provide symptomatic relief for osteoarthritis was developed more than 30 years ago DAmbrosio et al., 1981 ; . Many clinical trials have tested this hypothesis Institute of Medicine, 2004 ; and glucosamine supplements are widely used to relieve arthritic complaints Houpt et al., 1999 ; . To meet the demand for glucosamine nutritional supplements, three forms of glucosamine are commonly available: glucosamine hydrochloride, glucosamine sulfate, and N-acetyl-glucosamine. These glucosamine compounds are generally derived from chitin, a biopolymer present in the exoskeleton of marine invertebrate animals. The glucosamine derived from chitin in the cell walls of many fungi appears to be chemically identical to that found in marine invertebrates Institute of Medicine, 2004 ; . This report is a critical evaluation of the available information on the safety of glucosamine in animals and humans and its effects on glucose metabolism. The effects of glucosamine intake on blood, urine, and fecal parameters, blood pressure and pulse rate and reported side effects are summarized. NSAID are widely pre.

The 300-Hz rhythm was also increased by apomorphine, but not by orphenadrine. The 300-Hz rhythm was modulated by voluntary movement. Before levodopa administration, movement-related power increase in the 300-Hz rhythm was variably present in different subjects, whereas after levodopa it became a robust phenomenon [before 0.014 T 0.014 arbitrary units AU ; , after 0.178 T 0.339 AU; n 8, P 0.0078]. The dopamine-dependent 300-Hz rhythm probably reects a bistable compound nuclear activity and supports highresolution information processing in the basal ganglia circuit. An absent 300-Hz subthalamic rhythm could be a pathophysiological clue in Parkinson's disease. The 300-Hz rhythm also provides the rationale for an excitatoryand not only inhibitoryinterpretation of DBS mechanism of action in humans.
