RICE UNIVERSITY at the 1996 January and June AAS meetings. 4.2.5 Stellar Plasmas and Neutron Stars Michel is active in theoretical work concerning the properties of neutron stars and their evolution. The primary work here is to simulate the particle motion about a rotating neutron star with an inclined magnetic field, and extension of earlier work with Jurgen Krauss-Polstorff now being undertaken with Ian Smith and graduate student Peter Thacker. He is also collaborating with Hui Li at LANL on numerical calculations directed a simulating winds from pulsars. Of particular interest are the polar regions where the HST images suggests that an enhanced jet of relativistic wind is flowing. Work with Ben Eastlund and Ben Miller on pulsed gamma rays from pulsars has recently been submitted, which shows that pulsed gamma rays need not come from polar caps but rather can be produced by an isotropically filled magnetosphere. In collaboration with an international team of observers, Research Scientist I. A. Smith has been making significant progress in a program of multiwavelength observations of the quiescent counterparts to the Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters The three known sources produce brief intense outbursts of low energy gamma rays, and it appears they are completely new manifestations of neutron stars. The discovery of quiescent infrared counterparts to two of them has been a significant breakthrough, but one which has pointed out our complete lack of understanding of these objects. In contrast, a counterpart to the third source has only been detected in X-rays. We have been making detailed spectroscopic and photometric observations of all three sources in the optical and near-infrared at the USNO, CTIO, and KPNO at 10 m using TIMMI on the 3.6-m at ESO, in the far-infrared using IRAS and ISO, in the submillimeter using the JCMT, and in the millimeter using BIMA and SEST. Research Scientist Ian Smith and collaborators have been performing multiwavelength observations of Galactic black hole candidates. SEST observations of the region around GRS 1739-278 found a variable radio source, although it is uncertain whether this is the counterpart. Radio observations were made at Narrabri of GX 339-4 during its recent transition to the X-ray high state, in conjunction with our CGRO gamma-ray observing run: a preliminary analysis of the radio data promise surprising results. A search for an infrared stellar counterpart to 1E 1740.7-2942 was made using the IRTF: the data is currently being analyzed. We are currently setting up multiwavelength observing campaigns to coincide with our CGRO and XTE observations of GRS 1758-258 and GRS 1915 105 in 1997. For many years, it was believed that the magnetic fields of isolated neutron stars decay as they age, although this has recently been challenged. To test this, Research Scientist Ian Smith developed Monte Carlo pulsar evolution codes; the results of these can be compared with the observed pulsars. New observations have shown that some pulsars are born with much higher velocities than was previously believed, and a popular model for the gamma-ray burst sources uses high velocity neutron stars in an extended Galactic halo. By adding a population of high velocity neutron stars to the.

A potentiates APP homodimerization, forming A APP dimer complexes. This step does not require the cytoplasmic C-terminal ; domain of APP. Caspase-8 is then recruited to the complex, cleaving APP at position 664, leading to the generation of cytotoxic C-terminal APP peptides including C31, known to be proapoptotic. The time course of these binding and cleavage processes correlates with cell death. Furthermore, a preliminary study of AD brains n 3 ; showed a correlation between levels of caspase-cleaved APP fragments and soluble A . These findings suggest that soluble A -induced multimerization of APP at the cell surface may transduce a cell death signal, through recruitment and activation of caspase-8. Since it is increasingly appreciated that soluble A , rather than the fibrillar species in plaques, best correlates with the severity of AD, this mechanism may be of relevance to AD pathogenesis and suggests possible points for therapeutic intervention. These might include not only anti-apoptotic agents but also small molecules antagonising Ab-APP binding. -AJL Amyloid protein toxicty mediated by the formation of amyloid- protein precursor complexes. Fects.5, 6 Other advantages of augmentation over switching are maintenance of any partial response to the initial treatment and the potential of a rapid response. For decades, clinicians have used antipsychotic agents in combination with an antidepressant to treat psychotic or agitated depression.7 Atypical antipsychotics offer a potentially important therapeutic option in mood disorders due to their favorable tolerability profile and effects at multiple receptor systems that have been implicated in depression.8 Several mechanisms have been hypothesized to explain the benefits of augmentation with atypical antipsychotics in TRD. Atypical antipsychotics act on a variety of dopamine, serotonin 5-HT ; , and other receptors. The antagonism of 5-HT2A receptors is common among these drugs, and blockade of this subtype is seen with other antidepressant agents such as mirtazapine and nefazodone. Blockade of 5-HT2C receptors has been shown to enhance release of dopamine and norepinephrine in the frontal and prefrontal regions, and these effects may be synergistic with those of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors SSRIs ; .9 Blockade of 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors may also ameliorate some SSRI-induced adverse effects such as anxiety, insomnia, and sexual dysfunction.10 Preclinical studies suggest that combination of an SSRI and second generation antipsychotics may also influence immediate-early gene expression and synaptic efficacy in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampal areas.11 The evidence supporting the efficacy of atypical antipsychotic agents in treatment-resistant unipolar depression without psychotic features is surprisingly sparse. Most of the positive data have come from open-label studies and case reports and suffer from limitations inherent in uncontrolled studies.1220 However, randomized controlled studies of olanzapine, risperidone, and ziprasidone in TRD have failed to conclusively demonstrate the superiority of any one agent.2125 Aripiprazole, approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar mania, is the sixth atypical antipsychotic to be introduced to the market. Unlike its predecessors, aripiprazole is a partial dopamine agonist, acting on both postsynaptic D2 receptors and presynaptic autoreceptors. The partial agonism at dopaminergic neurons is believed to result in a decrease and increase in dopaminergic neurotransmission in areas of hypodopaminergic and hyperdopaminergic activity, respectively.26, 27 Additionally, aripiprazole displays partial agonism at the 5-HT1A receptors with potent antagonism at the 5-HT2A receptors.28, 29 At least theoretically, this binding profile has led aripiprazole to be considered as a dopamine-serotonin system stabilizer that may represent a new treatment approach in schizophrenia and possibly other psychiatric disorders including depression.28 Studies have shown that aripiprazole is superior to haloperidol in ameliorating depressive and negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.30 It also appears to have a fa and modafinil.

This trade-off has most often been considered in the context of malefemale differences, with males having greater incentive than females do to invest in mating effort, due to their larger variance in reproductive success Buss, 1998 ; . However, both males and females face the trade-off, and multiple strategies are available to both sexes Gangestad & Simpson, 2000 ; . Because extraversion is known to be associated with interest in mating and mate diversity Eysenck, 1976; Heaven et al., 2000 ; , it may be negatively correlated with interest in parenting. This hypothesis would predict some detectable reduction in care to offspring of extravert parents. Our previous research on Zuckerman's sensation-seeking scale provides some evidence of the costs and benefits of that trait Joinson & Nettle, submitted for publication ; . High scorers had increased numbers of sexual partners, but more accidents and addictions. The present study seeks to extend that work in two ways. First, it uses extraversion rather than sensation seeking. Although these two are related, they are not identical, and only the former is part of the five-factor model, which is the most widely accepted general model of personality. Second, we wish to examine more precisely the nature of mating strategies in relation to extraversion, and the different possible costs. To investigate these issues, we administered a questionnaire containing a personality inventory, questions about mating and reproduction, and more general questions about life outcomes, work, and health to 545 British adults. The participants were mature, with a wide range of ages, allowing questions about long-term reproductive strategy to be meaningful. The hypotheses to be tested were, in summary, that extraversion will be positively associated with matings and the attainment of other fitnessrelevant resources; that extraversion will be associated with increasing risk of physical illness or injury; and that extraversion will be negatively associated with parenting effort and, hence, offspring well-being and modicon.

The established equivalence allows the design of the periodic stationary estimator using an off-line procedure, composed of the following steps: Algorithm 1: Step 1: Obtain the lifted system Given the system described by 4.5.1 ; , the system is lifted using the method described by 4.4.4 ; . Step 2: Estimation error covariance computation Compute the auxiliary variables R, A, and GGT and solve the Riccati equation 4.6.4 ; . The stationary estimate error covariance matrix P K ; is equal to that obtained using 4.5.4 ; at the instant kM . Therefore, that equation can be iterated along the period to obtain P i and the Kalman gain Ki , using 4.5.4 ; and 4.5.3 ; , respectively. Step 3: Initialization Initialize the filter state x 0 ; x0 and the error covariance estimate P 0 ; . Step 4: On-line estimator Iterate the estimator given by 4.5.2 ; , where the subscript k denotes the matrices at instant k M OD Set k k + and repeat Step 4. In this off-line method no system of non-linear equations must be solved. Numerical error propagation is avoided and, with minor computations, well known Riccati equation solvers can be used and molindone.

The present study demonstrates overall that chronic treatment of newborn pigs with the COX inhibitor indomethacin causes transformation of the major dilator influence in the cerebrovascular circulation from PG to NO. First, chronic treatment with indomethacin or L-NAME does not affect eNOS expression in cerebral microvessels, even though both substances affect NOS activity increase or decrease, respectively ; . Second, chronic treatment of piglets with indomethacin or L-NAME does not change the pial arteriolar dilatory responses to hypercapnia or BK. Third, although the dilatory responses remain, chronic COX inhibition results in a change in the underlying mechanism from a and miralax.
041 ENHANCED INFLAMMATION AND ANGIOGENESIS IN SURGICALLY REMOVED CARDIAC VALVES OF PATIENTS WITH ESRD COMPARED TO THE GENERAL POPULATION. Kajbaf S, Veinot JP, Ha A, Zimmerman DL: Divisions of Nephrology, Pathology and Internal Medicine, Kidney Research Centre, University of Ottawa Hemodialysis HD ; patients are at greater risk of calcific cardiac disease than the general population GP ; . The purpose of this study was to compare surgically removed valves from HD and GP patients to determine if the process of calcification was different between the 2 groups. Ten HD patients with surgically removed valves were matched with 10 controls for sex, age and valve type. Demographics, baseline lab data and medication history were collected. Each valve was examined by 2 of the authors, one an experienced cardiac histopathologist JPV ; , blinded to patient group. Standard techniques were used to assess for calcification ossification and inflammatory cell infiltrates none to severe ; . Immunohistochemical stains using antibodies to CD31 endothelium ; , CD68 macrophages ; , CD20 B lymphocytes ; , CD45RO Tcells ; , PLAP AlkP ; , osteopontin and BMP4 were used. The magnitude of staining was graded from zero normal ; to three severe ; . Data were analyzed using t tests and Mann-Whitney U tests. The HD and GP patients did not differ with respect to sex, age, valve type, or blood pressure. However, the HD patients were more likely to be on calcium 7 10 vs and vitamin D 4 10 supplements but less likely to be on statins 2 10 vs than the GP patients. Grossly, all valves were calcified. Histologically, 7 of 10 valves from HD patients had moderate or severe inflammation compared to only 1 of 10 patients. The HD patients had a greater staining for CD31 p 0.002 ; and tended to have more CD68 p 0.069 ; compared to the GP patients. There was no difference between the 2 groups with respect to CD20, CD45RO, AlkP, osteopontin or BMP4. The demonstration of both osteopontin and bone morphogenic protein in the valves of HD and GP patients supports the notion that native valve calcification is an active process analogous to bone formation. However, the process of valvular calcification appears to be `more aggressive' in the ESRD patients in which more inflammation and angiogenesis was present. This is consistent with the presence of calcification within blood vessels and cardiac valves of even very young people with ESRD. 042 CHARACTERIZATION OF CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR LINKERS OF INNATE AND ADAPTIVE IMMUNITY IN THE PERITONEAL CAVITY. M. McCully1, T.A. Chau1, P.G. Blake2, J. Madrenas1, 2, 1Robarts Research Institute and the Departments of Microbiology & Immunology, and 2 Division of Nephrology, University of Western Ontario, London, ON. The cellular and molecular components of the human peritoneal cavity involved in linking innate and adaptive immunity during the course of Peritoneal Dialysis PD ; -associated peritonitis are largely uncharacterized. While analyzing the cellularity of PD effluents, we found a population of CD14 + CD4 + cells comprising 2.2% of the peritoneal cells. The phenotype of these cells is compatible with myeloid dendritic cell precursors pre-DC1 ; as they express high levels of HLA-DR, CD13, CD33, and CD86, and low levels of CD40, CD80, CD83, CD123 and CD209. Functional assays showed that these cells have endocytic capacity and are more potent allo-stimulators than peritoneal CD14 + CD4- lo cells and monocyte-derived macrophages. However, in contrast to monocytes, peritoneal CD14 + cells retained CD14 and CD4 expression after in vitro culture with GM-CSF and IL-4, while still upregulating CD1a, CD40, CD80 and CD209. Subsequent stimulation with LPS and IFN- induced a down-regulation of their endocytic capacity and acquisition of DC morphology. At the molecular level, the ser thr kinase RIP2 has been proposed to be a signalling molecule involved in linking the innate and adaptive immune responses. As a result, we analyzed the RIP2 expression levels in peritoneal immune cells during the course of PD-related peritonitis and found an increase RIP2 RNA levels in CD14 + cells on the 2nd day of a gram positive infection, while the amount of RIP2 protein in peritoneal immune cells increased by the third day of infection, at a time in which the immune response was in transition from innate to adaptive immunity. Our results indicate that the peritoneal cavity of stable PD patients contains a population of pre-DC1 cells that may be responsible for the bias towards a Th1 responses observed during PD-related peritonitis, and the up-regulation of a ser thr kinase whose activity may serve as a molecular link between innate and adaptive immunity. These findings improve our understanding of the immune response to infection in PD patients and moxifloxacin.
